Energy Transition at DP World

At DP World we focus on making a positive economic and societal impact wherever we work. Our sustainability strategy ‘Our World, Our Future’ is woven into everything we do, supporting the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals across safety, climate change, security, community engagement, people development, ethics and well-being. As part of this strategy DP World UK has invested in many measures to enable sustainable trade at its port operations at London Gateway and Southampton. We have made significant progress to reduce carbon emissions through maximising efficiency, using renewable energy and displacing fossil fuels and introducing innovative decarbonisation initiatives to help customers reduce their Scope 3 emissions with further projects in the pipeline.

On 1 October 2021 DP World UK introduced its Energy Transition Contribution (ETC) to support our goal of becoming net zero across all operations by 2050. Our ETC supports cleaner energy by funding the cost differential when switching from diesel to sustainable alternatives in the form of Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) and electricity. As a forward-thinking organisation, it is essential that we invest in sustainable solutions. To continue to contribute towards the energy transition investments, the Energy Transition Contribution will be reviewed on a regular basis at both DP World UK ports.

TRANSITION FROM DIESEL TO HVO

In 2022, DP World London Gateway initiated a trial of Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) as a sustainable alternative to diesel for port equipment. Following successful trials in 2022 and 2023, the port has exclusively used HVO for fuel since 2024.This shift has resulted in an outstanding reduction of 98% in fuel usage emissions. Explore the timeline of our emissions figures with the introduction of HVO.

FUTURE PROJECTS

We’re proud to be investing in a range of decarbonisation projects funded by the ETC, supporting our journey towards a lower carbon future. Upcoming initiatives include the introduction of Shoreside Power, allowing our customers vessels to plug into renewable energy while at berth, significantly reducing emissions. We're also rolling out multiple solar energy projects across our sites to further increase onsite renewable energy generation, installing charging infrastructure for electric trucks, and exploring the potential to offer Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) to hauliers at the same cost as diesel. We are continually looking at new projects to improve the efficiency of our operations.

CARBON INSET PROGRAMME

In addition, our current Carbon Inset Programme is already available to all import cargo owners, enabling them to actively reduce their Scope 3 emissions in a verified and impactful way.Registered importers routing cargo through DP World’s UK ports at Southampton and London Gateway will receive 50 kg CO₂e carbon inset credits for every import laden container.Customers will receive these credits in the form of a quarterly, independently verified certificate detailing the total kilograms of carbon inset credits received, based on the number of import laden containers moved during that period.

To speak with a member of our team, email us at EnergyTransition.uk@dpworld.com or visit our Carbon Inset Programme page.
