Helping supply chain go green in Europe
Date: 25/01/2023
Our Southampton container terminal had its greenest-ever year in 2022, reducing net carbon emissions from its fleet and installations by 55% and eliminating fossil diesel.
We are using HVO (hydrotreated vegetable oil) at our Southampton offering, as part of our commitment to helping meet Net Zero 2050 policy.
Sustainable development
Our Southampton and London Gateway sites are two of the UK’s biggest ports and we’re going green there, cutting congestion and emissions by moving more cargo by rail, which is taking 300,000 trucks off the roads.
Our new fourth berth at London Gateway will be all-electric and have the UK’s first all-electric terminal tractor. It will also be home to green and sustainable warehouses, with low emissions during construction and operations.
These efforts underpin how we are bringing sustainability into every aspect of our work, as detailed in the Our World, Our Future strategy. We’ve halved our emissions in Antwerp, where our Antwerp Gateway offers cutting-edge technology and outstanding intermodal connectivity, our Empty Depot Services offer storage, maintenance, cleaning and repair, and our HUPAC Intermodal rail terminal offers excellent transport connections.
Over the past eight years, investing in sustainable equipment and using locally generated electricity from our own windmill and a biogas plant has been key. We’ve also introduced an ultra-modern multimodal terminal there, and our off-dock empty depot.

Green warehouses and greener ports
Our Rotterdam World Gateway in the Netherlands is fully electric and the world’s first carbon-neutral container terminal. It has cranes that regenerate their own energy, and the port recycles all its waste.
Our Unifeeder business is leading the way on reducing fuel consumption and finding alternative fuels to help decarbonise the logistics industry. We’re also using technology and reducing vessel speeds to cut energy consumption.
These initiatives highlight how smarter trade is contributing to a vibrant, secure, and resilient society that’s fit for the future. We’re changing what’s possible for everyone – download our Smarter Trade Report 2022 to know more.
